It has been variously described as a “Fantastic melodrama”, a “Futuristic fairy tale”, or “Dark comedy”.
This futuristic play, by Karel Čapek (1890–1938) first premiered in 1921.
Yet questions of our times – artificial intelligence, the industrial creation and manipulation of life, and humanity’s future relationship with technology are all at the centre of the drama.
